Randy & Tammy Gibbs, Owners
A resident of Roanoke since 1990, Randy grew up in Ranburne, Alabama. His funeral service career began in 1974 at Wynn Funeral Home in Bowdon, Georgia. He completed his education at Jefferson State School of Mortuary Science in Birmingham and holds National Board certification as a funeral director/embalmer.
Randy served the people of Cleburne County and surrounding areas during his time at Dryden Funeral Home in Heflin. He was employed as a funeral director/embalmer there for ten years, from 1979 to early 1990.
Randy Gibbs purchased Quattlebaum Funeral Home in 1990 and moved to Roanoke with his wife, Tammy, and infant daughter, Kristin. Together with his wife, they operated Quattlebaum's for four years before expanding the family business in 1994 to include Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee and Randolph Memory Gardens. In the meantime, the family expanded also, to include a son, Joseph, born in 1992.
He has been a member of the Alabama Funeral Directors Association since 1990 and has served a five-year tenure as an officer, including President during the 1999-2000 term. Randy also served as Randolph County Coroner for 16 years. He is a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church.
Tammy Gibbs was raised in Cleburne County also. She graduated with a BS Degree in Accounting from West Georgia College and earned the Certified Public Accountant certificate from the State of Georgia. After she and her husband purchased Quattlebaum Funeral Home, she began working to meet the requirements for the Alabama Funeral Directors License and was awarded that certification in January 1993. Currently, she handles the accounting, federal/state reporting, and finances of the firm. She is a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church.
Donald E. Benefield, Founder
Don was born and raised in Randolph County where he graduated high school in 1954. He then served as a funeral director apprentice at Hunter Allen Myhand in LaGrange, Georgia, for one year before joining the United States Air Force, where he was a member of the military police until 1959.
Don went on to get his degree in Mortuary Science in 1962 from the Dallas Institute-Gupton Jones in Dallas, Texas. He worked as a funeral director/manager for Kraeer Funeral Home in Pompano Beach, Florida, from 1959-1972. Don founded Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee in 1972 and was the owner until 1994. He was a servant to the people of Randolph County from the time he founded Benefield Funeral Home until his passing on February 18, 2015.
Joseph A. Gibbs, Funeral Director/Manager
Joseph grew up in Roanoke, Alabama, where he graduated from Handley High School in 2010. He attended the University of Alabama for two years and completed the Mortuary Science program at Jefferson State Community College in December of 2016 at the top of his class. He became a fully licensed funeral director/embalmer in February 2017. Joseph is the son of Randy and Tammy Gibbs, owners of Benefield Funeral Home and Quattlebaum Funeral Home, and has been employed with the family business since 2008. He is a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church.
Larry Wortham, Funeral Director
Larry is a lifelong resident of Wedowee ,Alabama, where he graduated from Randolph County High School. He began his career with Benefield Funeral Home in 1990 and became a Licensed Funeral Director through the State of Alabama in 1995.
He and his wife of 46 years Diane Wortham have two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and are active members of Iduma Congregational Methodist Church.
Sharon Rae Husbands, Funeral Director/Embalmer
Raised in Clay County, Alabama, Sharon graduated from Lineville High School and attended Gadsden State Community College to pursue a career in surgical technology, which she worked in for more than 20 years. Currently residing in the Ofelia area with her husband Whit Husbands, she is now serving Randolph County with her work at Benefield Funeral Home after graduating from the Jefferson State College of Mortuary Science in 2022.
Terry L. Sparks, Funeral Director/Embalmer
Terry grew up in Randolph County before moving to Cleburne County where he graduated from High School in 1982. He went on to get his degree in Mortuary Science from Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham. He became a licensed funeral director/embalmer in in the State of Alabama 1987.
Terry has served Randolph County and surrounding communities in funeral service for the past 30 years. He is currently serving his 2nd term as Randolph County Coroner where he also served as deputy coroner under the previous administration.
Terry and his wife, Jean Sparks, have four children; Madison Sparks, Thomas Sparks, Robbie Conger, and Michelle Conger and four grandchildren. They are members of Weathers Heights Church of Christ.
Steve Prince, Funeral Director's Assistant
Steve began serving the citizens of Randolph County as a Funeral Director's Assistant in 2008. He is a retired Quality Control Technician with a 28-year career with two different companies.
A resident of Randolph County since 1973, Steve is married to Becky Prince and they have one daughter, Ginae' and one grandson, Dallas.
He is a member of Napoleon Church of Christ.
Mathew Knight, Funeral Director's Assistant
Matthew is a lifelong resident of Randolph County where he graduated from Wadley High School and went on to Southern Union State Community College and attended Auburn University. He received his AAS in Emergency Medical Services-Paramedic. He retired from Southern Union where he taught EMS. He has been a paramedic in Randolph County since 2000. He has worked as Funeral Service Assistant since 2020.
Matthew is married to Dianne Lacy Knight and has three children, Erica Strength (Cory), Matt Knight, and Luke Knight and two grandchildren, Remington and Drake.
Marty Smith, Funeral Director's Assistant
A Randolph County native, Marty lives in Roanoke. He has been with the funeral home since the beginning of 2021 and has plans to earn his funeral director’s license in the near future.
Denise Wilson, Funeral Director's Assistant
Denise grew up in Roanoke, graduated from of Handley High School, Southern Union College and Jacksonville State University where she earned a Bachelor of Education degree. After teaching school for a few years, she began a career at the Randolph County Department of Human Resources where she has worked as a case worker for more than 25 years. Denise works on a part-time basis assisting with family visitations. She and her husband Greg are members of Roanoke First Methodist Church. They have a blended family that includes four children, Lindsey, Jeff, Maibyn and Tanner. They have also been blessed with four grandchildren.
Luke Alsop, Funeral Director/Embalmer Apprentice
Luke grew up in heard County, Georgia where he graduated from Heard County High School with the class of 2021. He is attending Jefferson State Community college for his mortuary science degree. Luke is serving His apprenticeship here at Quattlebaum Funeral Home.
Abbie Mitchum, Funeral Director/Embalmer Apprentice
A Randolph County Native, Abbie graduated from Handley High School. She is the daughter of Pam and Keith Mitchum and currently enrolled at Southern Union State Community College. After Southern Union, Abbie plans to finish her education at Jefferson State where she will get her degree in Funeral Service Education.
Michelle J. Conger, Office Manager
Michelle grew up in Randolph County where she graduated from Woodland High School in 2000. She came to work at Benefield Funeral Home in 2013 after being a stay-at-home mom for two years. Michelle and her two children, Clara and Raylan Ward, live in Wedowee. She is a member of Rocky Branch Baptist Church.
Malcom Bassett, Building & Property Maintenance
A lifelong Randolph County resident, Malcom began working with the funeral home in 2010 as the building and property maintenance manager,. With his extensive experience in construction, he is a valuable asset in keeping the property and grounds of the funeral home well-maintained.
He and his wife, Beth, reside in the Wadley community where they are members of Corinth Christian Church.
