Obituary of Paul Grant Showalter

Funeral services for Paul “Chief” Showalter, age 80, of Wedowee will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015, at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Wedowee with Rev. Cade Ferris officiating. Burial will follow at Wedowee City Cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00-8:00 PM on Sunday, December 27, 2015. Mr. Showalter will lie in state for one hour prior to services beginning on Monday. Mr. Showalter passed away Saturday, December 26, 2015, at Wedowee Hospital. Survivors include: one daughter, Brenda Boone (husband, Charlie) of Wedowee; two grandchildren, Charles Daniel Boone (wife, Blair) and Jennifer Boone Stone (husband, Jay); four great-grandchildren, Charlie Stone, Chelsea Stone, Cameron Boone, and Jaylee Stone; one sister, Naomi Cavanaugh of Wedowee; and one brother, Gordon Showalter of Wedowee. Pallbearers will be Daniel Boone, Jay Stone, Tim Coe, Terry Graham, and Leon Saffelle. Honorary pallbearers will be all past and present member of the Wedowee Police Department and all Randolph County Law Enforcement Officers. A Remington, Virginia native, Mr. Showalter was born on September 15, 1935, the son of Frank and Ada Virginia Downs Showalter. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wedowee and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Mr. Showalter began his law enforcement career in 1975 in his native state of Virginia, serving with the Arlington County and Loudoun County Sheriff’s Departments. He moved to Wedowee in 1988 and in April 1991, he began his tenure with the Wedowee Police Department. He was appointed Chief of Police in September 1992 and served until his retirement in October 2012. Memorials may be floral or donations may be made to the Randolph County Animal Shelter or the First Baptist Church of Wedowee.
