Obituary of Julian Michael Murphy

Funeral services for Michael “Poppy” Murphy, age 60, of Newell will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at 2:00 PM from Jordan Chapel Congregational Methodist Church with Brian Moore and Keith Norred officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, December 27, 2016. Mr. Murphy will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Wednesday. Mr. Murphy passed away Monday, December 26, 2016, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Georgia. Survivors include his wife, Patresa McCormick Murphy of Newell; one daughter, Heather Henderson (husband, Owen) of Carrollton; two granddaughters, Madeline Faith Henderson and Sadie Reese Henderson; his mother, Betty Murphy of Newell; one sister, Anita Chasse` (husband, Philip) of Newell; and several nephews and nieces. Pallbearers will be Dustin Chasse`, Kip Chasse`, Mark Murphy, Phillip Murphy, Billy Ayres, Scott Young, Randy Smith, and Luke Sims. A Randolph County native, Mr. Murphy was born on January 4, 1956, in Bowdon, Georgia, the son of Julian A and Betty Ayres Murphy. He was a member of Jordan Chapel Congregational Methodist Church where he served as a deacon for over 25 years and was the caretaker of the church as well as an auxiliary fireman for Morrison’s Crossroad Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Murphy retired from small engine repair work for Hyatt’s Lawn & Garden. He loved spending time with his granddaughters and was an avid wood worker. He was preceded in death by his father; one daughter, Tabatha Murphy Hancock; and one grandson, Logan Daniel Hancock. Memorials may be floral or donations may be made to Jordan Chapel’s Building Fund.
