Obituary of Betty Young Gross
Funeral services for Betty Young Gross, age 86, of Wedowee will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Wedowee with Rev. Sarah Corson and Rev. David Little officiating. Burial will follow at Wedowee City Cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 PM on Friday, October 13, 2017. Mrs. Gross will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Saturday.
Mrs. Gross passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at Traylor’s Retirement Center in Roanoke.
Survivors include her children, Ronnie Young (wife, Shelia) of Woodland, David Young (wife, Christie) of Port St. Joe, FL, and Jane Waters (husband, Gunny) of Wedowee; eight grandchildren, Ron Young, Paige Lovvorn, Hollie Blakely, Brad Young, Tori Gillespie, Jeni Young, Lee Waters, and Kyle Waters; ten great-grandchildren; and one sister, Grace Justice of Columbus, GA.
Pallbearers will be Brad Young, Gunny Lee Waters, Kyle Waters, Angelo Hanners, Lamar Payne, and Ronnie Yates.
An Opelika, AL/Columbus, GA native, Mrs. Gross was born on July 1, 1931, the daughter of John Henry and Ethel Singleton Martin and lived most of her life in Wedowee. She was a seamstress at Palm Beach Company and was employed by Harco Drugs. Mrs. Gross enjoyed crocheting, quilting and sewing, and was well known to people in the area for the beautiful hand-crocheted Christmas ornaments she made. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Wedowee for 41 years where she taught Sunday School for a number of those years. She was beloved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed. Mrs. Gross was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Cecil Young and Blake Gross; her brothers, Thomas, Johnny and Delmar Martin; and one great-grandchild, Trey Young.
