Obituary of Morgan Viron Cantrell

Funeral services for Morgan Viron Cantrell, age 88, of Roanoke, AL, will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at 2:00 PM CST at Highway Congregational Methodist Church with Rev. Jason Owens and Rev. Tracy Cantrell officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, May 11, 2020 from 5:00 CST to 8:00 CST. Mr. Cantrell passed away Saturday, May 9, 2020, at his residence. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Joyce Pike Cantrell of Roanoke; daughter, Joan Carter (Mike) of Carrollton, GA; sons, Johnny Cantrell, Sr. (Jane) of Florala, AL; Teddy Joe Cantrell (Cindy) of Carrollton, GA, and Trey E. Cantrell (Wendy) of Carrollton, GA; daughter-in-law, Emily Cantrell; grandchildren, Kristin Parker, Kevin Cantrell, Chad Carter, Luke Carter, Wendy Herring, Morgan Cantrell, Payton Cantrell, Katie Cantrell, Emory Cantrell, Amanda Cotton, Tiffany Robinson ,and Brandon Merritt; great-grandchildren, Ryan Parker, Jackson Parker, Caroline Parker, Addison Carter, Wyatt Carter, Colt Carter, Samuel Herring, Courtney Herring, Raylee Herring, Cameron Cantrell, Kaydenn Cantrell, Charley Cotton, Isabella Cotton, Daniel Robinson, Dawson Robinson, and Brayden Cribb; sisters, Tempie Mitchell, and Mary Winnette Hitson (Herb); brother, James Kersey Cantrell (Nan), Major E. Cantrell, Jr. (Sherry), and Donnie Cantrell. Pallbearers will be Heath Meadows, Danny Cantrell, Chad Carter, Luke Carter, Emory Cantrell, Drew Parker, and Russ Williams. Mr. Cantrell was born March 25, 1932 to Major E. and Winnie Mae Cantrell in the Woodland community. After graduating from Woodland High School in 1949, he attended Auburn University and graduated with a degree in Agricultural Administration in 1953. During college he met the love of his life, Joyce Pike, of Rock Mills, AL. They were soon married and celebrated their 67th anniversary in April of this year. His career took him from Alabama to Carrollton, GA in 1965 where he worked for 28 years with the Carroll County Health Department and the State of Georgia EPD as a Unit Coordinator in the Solid Waste Program before retiring in 1991. Morgan Attended Highway Congregational Methodist Church in the Potash Ridge community where he was the choir director for many years. His many hobbies include farming, traveling, the U.S. and abroad and he enjoyed watching all sports, but he especially enjoyed watching Auburn University sports with family for over 60 years. Mr. Cantrell was preceded in death by his parents; one son Morgan Ronnie Cantrell; grandson, Johnny E. Cantrell, Jr.; sister, Maggie Faye Veal; brothers, Burnze E. Cantrell, Harold E. “Jim” Cantrell, and William T. “Sock” Cantrell.
