Obituary of Robert Olin Messer, Sr.

Funeral services for Robert Olin Messer, Sr., age 90, of Wedowee will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Benefield funeral Chapel with Rev. Phillip Twilley officiating.  Burial will follow at Ava United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM on Tuesday before services begin.

Mr. Messer passed away Saturday, June 12, 2021, at his residence.

Survivors include: one daughter, Denise Messer Thompson (Phil) of Wedowee; one son, Robert O. Messer, Jr., of Wedowee; six grandchildren, Sarah Denise Cox, Laura Leigh Twilley (Phillip Michael), Jennifer Elaine Laster (Terry), Robert Olin Messer, III, Carrie Anne Holloway (Jerome), and Daniel Adam Messer; five great-grandchildren, Ethan Ashley White, Eric Michael White, Kyle Jeremiah Waters, Caris Rebekah Twilley, and Claire Elizabeth Twilley; and one brother, Daniel Post (Lois) of Marietta, GA.

Pallbearers will be Jon White, Ethan White, Eric White, Wortham Bailey, Terry Laster, Don Sheppard, and K. J. Waters.  Honorary pallbearers will be Phil Thompson, Paul Kirby, Roy Doug Benefield, and Donnie Wortham.

A Wedowee native, Mr. Messer was born on January 18, 1931, the son of Kermit Olin and Lera Mae McCain Messer.  He attended Ava United Methodist Church and served in the United States Army.  Mr. Messer retired from General Motors and was the owner/operator of Pop’s Landing and Messer’s Campground for over 30 years after his retirement.  He was a big Alabama football fan.  Mr. Messer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sara Fetner Messer; son, Stephen Glenn Messer; and sisters, Margaret Messer Cooper and Brenda Post.
