Obituary of Carl Battles
Carl Wilburn Battles, Jr., passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the age of 78 in Carrollton, GA, surrounded by his family. He was born in Rome, GA, on May 8, 1945, to the late Carl Wilburn and Elnora Battles.
Mr. Battles was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved and enjoyed having his family around him. He was a devoted Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons fan. He also loved fishing, woodworking, and gardening.
Mr. Battles retired from Georgia Power in 2000 as the Economic Development Manager in Douglasville, GA, after an exemplary 36-year career.
Mr. Battles was an active member of his Douglasville community participating in the United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Development Authority, and Rotary Club along with several other organizations. Mr. Battles was also a very successful youth baseball coach for many years, coaching and mentoring many young men along the way.
Since moving to Wedowee, AL, in 2001, Mr. Battles was an active member of First United Methodist Church. He served as Chairman of the Church Council for many years. He also served on several other committees.
Mr. Battles is survived by his wife of 58 years, Cynthia; his daughter, Jennifer Bragg (Ronnie) and his son, Jeff Battles; his granddaughters, Brianna Willingham (Eric), Blair Moody (Caleb), Emily Gillespie (Conner), and Caroline Battles; three great-grandchildren, Gracie Mae and Emma Rose Willingham and Audrey Jane Moody.
Visitation for Mr. Battles will be held on Friday, September 15th at Wedowee First United Methodist Church from 9:30-11:00 AM with a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Wedowee City Cemetery with Pastor Todd Noren-Hentz officiating and Benefield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
