Obituary of Don Johnson Gay

Don Johnson Gay, age 79, of Cragford, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at his home.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Judith Ayres Gay of Cragford; three daughters, Cindy Cleveland (David) of Alex City, Stacey Fowler of Wedowee, and Mary Clancy Hilyer (Jon) of Tallassee; two sons, Chris Gay (Nikki) of Cragford and John Gay (Holly) of Front Royal, VA; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, Lauren Railey and Scott Fowler; a brother-in-law, Alan Ayres; and a niece, Robin Mitchell.

A Randolph County native, Mr. Gay was born on April 2, 1944, the son of Bruce and Dorothy Johnson Gay.  He was Christian by faith and was owner/operator of Don Gay Lumber Company for 35 years.  Mr. Gay loved Jesus, his family, his friends, his dogs, was an avid outdoorsman, and all things nature.  He was affectionately known as “Papa Don” to all those that knew and loved him.  Mr. Gay was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Kelly Railey; one grandchild, Tyler Crowder; one great-grandchild, Joanna Joy Fowler; and one brother, Max Gay.

A visitation with family will be held at Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee on February 24, 2024 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
