Obituary of Nellie Calhoun Sikes

Obituary Notice Funeral services for Mrs. Nellie Calhoun Sikes, age 87, of Wedowee, will be held Friday, October 2, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from the Ava United Methodist Church with Bro. Richard Smith and Rev. Gary Henderson officiating. Mrs. Sikes will lie in state one hour before the service at the church. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2009. Mrs. Sikes died Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at USA Healthcare, Adams LLC in Alexander City. Mrs. Sikes is survived by four daughters, Judy (husband Gene) Calhoun of Wetumpka, Trudy (husband Joe) Calhoun of LaGrange, GA, Donna (husband Lynn) Bain of Wedowee, Elaine (husband Jack) Paschal of Fleming Island, FL; one son, Tim (wife Katherine) Sikes of Wedowee; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Joe Wilkerson, Gleason Poole, Tony Messer, Ralph Witt, Hulond Humphries, Chris Hammond. Mrs. Sikes was born September 16, 1922, the daughter of Henry and Lara Smith Calhoun. She was a member of the Ava United Methodist Church and had been a seamstress for Lamar Manufacturing. Mrs. Sikes was preceded in death by her husband, Garvis Sikes; her parents; two brothers; three sisters. Flowers will be accepted or donations to the Ava United Methodist Church Building Fund.
